Abstract
This study examines entrepreneurship characteristics and traits in business activities in Benin City, Edo State. It exploits entrepreneurship as a veritable tool for the growth of business. The main objective of the study therefore, is to examine the relationship between entrepreneurship characteristics and business performance in Benin City. The study adopted a quantitative research method: exploratory and descriptive. This made the use of primary data imperative. A sample of one hundred respondents were randomly selected in Benin City from the study population. Nineteen research questions were developed. The questions focused on innovativeness, pro-activeness/opportunities, Resource leveraging/Risk taking, and customer intensity which constitute the characteristics and traits of entrepreneurs. Simple percentage was used to analyze the data while multiple regression statistics method was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that there is a relationship between entrepreneurship characteristics and Business performance. The study also revealed that entrepreneurial characteristics and trait are the missing link in abysmal performance of entrepreneurs. Over 90° 0 of the businesses in Benin City were found to imbibe entrepreneurial practices. It was recommended that the government should step up effort in promoting entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and attitude. Government should organize innovative trade fare that will inspire the creativity of the people and the need to imbibe intellectual property right for creativity.
